Jussi Parikka, Paolo Patelli and I were grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the “Earth Sensations” symposium edited by Iwona Janicka and Tobias Skiveren in Theory&Event journal. The symposium centers on the notion of ‘sensorial tactics’ as ways of conceptually and relationally engaging with our socioecological environments in this disaster and crisis-filled milieu.
In our essay, “Narrating Environmental Data: Story and Place, Architecture and Affect,” we reflect on our experimental articulations of spatialized affect through site-specific narration in our 2023 Helsinki Biennal environmental audiotour. Here, we discuss our performative exploration of the entanglement of abstract/digitally-driven sensing and embodied sensation in themes, apparatuses and motifs of environmental data, drawing inspiration from critical concepts in Critical Data Studies and architecture as well as from creative methods such as autographic visualization.
